Why is Portland Bill Lighthouse and Visitor Centre great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

Young or old, student or professor, you’ll learn some fascinating things when you visit  Portland Bill Lighthouse and Visitor Centre.

You’ll have one of our experienced and knowledgeable tour guides with you on an informative and enjoyable ‘Journey to the top’ of this fully working lighthouse.

The Journey to the top encompasses history, geography, design- technology,  science and art.

It has also been found to give all ages a great feeling of achievement when reaching the top of the 155 steps to the magnificent lantern room, and look through the diamond shaped windows at the beautiful Jurassic Coast for miles.

41 metres below you can see the old Portland Bill quarry that still bears the gaping chasms where the Portland Stone was hewn to build this iconic lighthouse and indeed many more historical buildings around the world. You’ll gaze in amazement at the 3.5 tonne lens that shines its distinctive four flashes of light 25 miles out to sea every night, and when you’ve descended the tower you can walk around our Visitor Centre and learn about the lighthouse keepers, find out about Trinity House the organisation that operates the lighthouse’s and has safeguarded the mariner for over 500 years.
